Will all Final Fantasy games become available on the Playstation 3?

I want to be able to play ALL of the Final Fantasy games without buying a bunch of different consoles. Is that going to happen? Has it already? Thanks!

If you only look at the main series, the problem here is Final Fantasy III. It has only been released for the Nintendo DS in North America, and it has never come out for a Sony system. Square Enix would have to redevelop the game for Sony, and there probably isn’t enough profit in that to make it worthwhile.

Final Fantasy I, II, and IV – IX were released on the PS1. Since the PS3 is backwards compatible with the PS1, all of these games can be played on it as long as you own the disc. Final Fantasy VII and VIII have been released on the PSN, and a Final Fantasy IX release on the PSN is likely. Releases of the other games on the PSN are possible but uncertain.

The PS2 games (Final Fantasy X – XII) pose a problem because newer PS3 systems cannot play PS2 games. Also, no PS2 game has been released on the PSN, and it’s not certain if the PSN has the ability to handle PS2 games. Final Fantasy XI is also a problem because it is an MMORPG, and MMOs tend to have a limited life span by their very nature.

If you want the spin-offs as well, many of them are unavailable. Final Fantasy Tactics was released on the PS1 and PSP, and it is available on the PSN, but the other Tactics games came out for Nintendo systems. Likewise, all of the Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles games are exclusive to Nintendo. Final Fantasy X-2 and Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII are PS2 games and will have the same problems as other PS2 games. The PSP games like Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII and Dissidia Final Fantasy might be downloadable for the PS3 eventually, but they can’t right now.

In short, no you can’t play them all on the PS3. If you want to play the main series, you will need a DS and either a PS2 or an older PS3 that plays PS2 games. Getting all the spin-offs will require numerous systems.

One day it might happen, but right now, the PS3 doesn’t have backwards compatibility, so getting Final Fantasy X – XII. Most of the other games should be playable on the PSN soon. From what I understand, all of the ones made for the PS1 are already available, so the lesser ones can easily be put on PSN.

They actually did re-release all of the FF games for the PS1 (except for FF3 for DS), so it is likely to happen again.
