This is the 2nd in an ongoing series of articles about my experience in the electronic salvage, recycling and gold recovery business. At first, I was going to write this up as an ebook and sell it, but I decided - given the tough economic times we all face - to give it away in installments. In my last post I began the story of how I got into the electronics, telecommunications and computer recycling / gold recovery business. I'll tell you a bit more about it here.
This seeming very small "tip" I got from the telecommunication workers turned out to be a virtual gold mine for me and my family.
Up until the time I met these guys, all of their scrap from upgrades and repairs to telecommunication microwave repeater stations in Nevada went into the local landfills. But, because of the upgrade across the state from tube type repeater radios to solid state, the amount of scrap was just too much to handle in this manner.
They told me that they thought the scrap was going up for bid and that I should contact the local office about it. I first, though, wanted to know what it was that I was bidding on. So, I went to the local office, told them of my intentions and they gave me a key to a repeater station and told me to take notes, samples, talk to workers - in short do whatever it took to make a reasonable bid that I could live with.
I headed to Nevada with my very used dodge van. I brought back samples of microwave tubing (beautiful pure copper rectangular tubing with brass flanges), large batteries for their backup power, gold plated attentuators, connectors and the like and many many photos of gigantic steel racks, radios racks of extruded aluminum, etc. etc.
Turns out that the company just wanted a flat per pound bid for everything but the batteries and then a separate bid for the batteries. Batteries at the time were very low in value and, in fact, becoming hard to find anyone who would take them for scrap at all. I asked if I could just bid on everything else and leave the batteries behind and was told no - it was all or nothing.
I was also told that I would probably be the only contractor to bid - they clearly were not interested in the revenue, they just wanted the stuff out of there.
I bid only 1/4 cent per pound on the batteries and just a few cents on the rest. I was awarded the contract. I still remember the local office guy saying, "are you sure you can handle this?" and me saying, "sure, no problem at all."
When I got into my van and drove back home I was in a daze. I thought, how in the world am I going to do this? The bits and pieces quickly came to me - fortunately I had grown up with a can-do attitude - a crucial part of your mental makeup if you are going to be a successful recycler / salvager.

Patrick Forsyth takes a humorous look at presentations and how to avoid being a stand up comic.
Presentations can be daunting; yet there can be a good deal hanging on them, they directly affect finances, reputations, personal image, even careers.
Exactly what is said and how it is put matters.
At worst, people go on too long, their explanation explains nothing and where they are going is wholly unclear. Some fidget endlessly, others remain stock still gripping the lectern in front of them until their knuckles go white, fear rising from them like a mist. Their slides can only be read from the back of the room with a telescope, something made worse by their asking brightly "Can you see that alright?" though there is precious little they can do if the answer is "no". They barely pause for breath, rushing from Err to Um, many words inappropriately chosen and many more too long. Indeed, the only long word of which some presenters appear ignorant is rehearsal.
Easy?
Of course, a lucky few believe that making a presentation is second nature. They know they can excel just by winging it, and that for people to actually understand anything of their impenetrable gobbledegook, some care is needed. So, they talk v-e-r-y s-l-o-w-l-y; use simple words, and generally proceed assuming the audience have the brains of a retarded dormouse. They spell out complicated bits in CAPITAL LETTERS, speaking louder as they do so. Though they are always careful not to upset people by being condescending (you do know what condescending means don't you?).
For such speakers, presenting is to be savoured. They need only the briefest introduction and they are away, moving blindly past the first slide - displayed upside down - with the audience hanging on their every repetitive mannerism while thinking "If they scratch their ear whilst stood on one leg again, I'm walking out". It makes lesser mortals feel all too sadly inadequate – even the famous: it was Mark Twain who said, "It normally takes me three weeks to prepare a good impromptu speech". Poor man; lucky he was a good writer.
Standing up before an important audience knowing that they would rather chew off their own fingers than sit and listen to someone who cannot make the simplest point clear, is rather like being pushed into a lion's den. Without an understanding of how to go about it, you will be in deep, deep trouble. No audience will warm to an ill-prepared speaker who flounders through in a tedious, confusing and poorly delivered way. Furthermore, such people are unlikely to magically acquire the requisite skills in the few seconds between being introduced and rising to their feet to speak.
So, if you are not a natural, and few people are, you need to give presenting some thought. Once you are actually in the lion's den it's a little late to discover that salvation is not guaranteed by saying "Nice pussycat".

What is the best program to color comic books fast.?
I have a published comic book and I'm adding more issues to. Thing is I'm trying a online comic comunity named drunk duck to promote and crtique it. I just really began coloring in the computer and I have been using the Paint program that colors chunks of area, but I have to go over it cover too many holes it leaves. This takes hours. I tried photo paint and that's slow too. Is there a faster way to color? I'm really looking for free or a bargan program, but if it's really good I'll try it.

How to Make a Great Yearbook
Here we are at the start of another school year, which means it's time to think about starting the yearbook process. If you don't know where to start, keep reading because this article will tell you how to create a great yearbook.
1.) Get organized. Putting together a yearbook is a lot of work, so you're going to want to do so in an organized fashion. Delegate different tasks to students (i.e. layout, caption writing, etc.) and draw-up a timeline so you can stay on top of deadlines. That way, you won't be scrambling around when it's the end of the school year.
2.) Decide on a theme. One thing that can make a yearbook memorable is its theme. The theme helps bring the book together and can give you some focus when producing it. Themes can be humorous (comic books), sports-oriented (homecoming), or even related to something in pop culture.
3.) Take a lot of pictures. In addition to the head shots produced during school picture day, yearbooks need a wide array of photos depicting school events (assemblies, dances), classes, football games, etc. Take as many candid and posed pictures as possible because for every good one, there are bound to be a few that aren't usable. Also, take your pictures with a digital camera, if possible. You can upload the photos right to your computer and save money on film and development costs.
4.) Lay it out. At some point, you'll need to lay out pages for the book. You can either do this by hand (the old-fashioned way) or with a software program. Organize students by grade and have a separate section for faculty. Group all the sports pictures together and have an area devoted to special events. And so on. Be sure to write some interesting copy to go along with everything.
5.) Proof your work. Before the books are bound, they need to be checked for accuracy and consistency. Be sure to correct any typos, delete any duplicate photos, and so on. After all, you and your students want to be proud of your work.

Drawing Comic Book Pages Part I: Thumbnails, and Pencils Versions
Drawing a comic book page like the ones in super hero comic books can be fun but it's no game.
Readers can see and read a full colored page in 30 seconds, but it takes an artist 8 to 16 hours (or more) to produce it.
Why?
Because most professional comic book artists go through five stages to complete a full comic book page of high quality. Some of those stages require much more than an hour to complete. Stages are:
1) Thumbnails creation
2) Pencils version
3) Inked version
4) Colored version
5) Lettered version
Note: Usually, it is not one but several artists who produce a single comic book page. This is because each artist specializes in a particular stage. The end result is often better when produced by a team. And working this way also speeds up the process.
Let's describe the first two stages in this article:
1) Thumbnails creation
After reading the script (which besides the dialogs and captions may include specific descriptions and instructions from the writer), the artist spends some time imagining how the page should look so it can tell the story well (without the need of words), and it looks good and entertaining.
When the artist is done playing around with variations of the panels and the page in his (or her) mind, the artist grabs a piece of paper (usually a Letter or A4 size, blank sheet of computer printer paper), and starts sketching one or more versions of the page (often using an HB pencil) at a very small scale.
The size of these small (and sketchy) pages may vary but they are approximately 2 by 3 inches each (5 x 7 cm). Since they're much smaller than the final pages, they are known as thumbnails.
This stage is very important because thumbnails are a practical, quick and effective way to define the best layout for a page (amount of panels and their shape) and where to place the main items (like characters, large props, backgrounds, etc.) Important facial expressions, action lines and perspective are also included in them.
If you try doing this on a full size board and make a gross mistake, you will have to toss that board and start over. Thumbnails prevent that because you can do about six of them in a very inexpensive sheet, to try things out until you find what works.
Note: Artists seldom care for or keep their thumbnails and toss them away.
One case doing thumbnails is mandatory is when writers or editors request the artist to do them to get their approval before drawing the final pages.
So, if you're serious about drawing comics, I suggest you always draw one or more thumbnails of your pages until you are totally satisfied with them to use as reference for the final, full size page.
Note: Thumbnails are drawn quickly and loose so they usually look very "energetic." The challenge is to produce a final page that is as energetic (or more) than its thumbnail. Unfortunately this is not always the case, sometimes because reference like photographs or 3D images is overused for poses or expressions when creating the final page, making it look static or dull.
2) Pencils Version
After the thumbnail is done (and approved if required), the artist grabs a white board that is 11 by 17 inches to draw the final page using a pencil, and the thumbnail as reference.
Note: If you are used to the metric system, 11 by 17 inches is a bit smaller than 30 x 45 cm. Comparing it to standard sizes, it is near the size of an A3 size paper.
So that's a big board. Then... Wait!
Comic books are MUCH smaller than that. Regular super hero comic books are about 6.5 by 10 inches (16 x 20 cm.)
So... Why do artists draw the final page at such a big scale?
Because it's easier to draw better at a larger scale.
In my case, I scotch an 11 by 17 inches (or A3) white board to the drawing table and using a light blue pencil, draw a 10 by 15 inches rectangle in the center (when the board doesn't already have such a rectangle.) That area is where the page is drawn.
Still using the light blue pencil, and the thumbnail as reference, I draw in a somewhat sketchy way, the entire page (including the panel borders) inside that 10 by 15 inches area. I do add details, and some of the final pencils but the overall drawing is still sketchy. This process can take an hour or so depending on the complexity of the page.
Then, I take an HB pencil and draw the entire page AGAIN, on top of the light blue pencil, but this time paying extra attention to detail, making the drawing look final. This process always takes more time than the "light blue pencil" step.
Why use a light blue pencil? And why draw the page twice?
The light blue pencil is used to draw the foundation over which the final artwork is drawn using the regular pencil.
And it is light blue (a different color than gray) to be able to erase it easily using image editing software (like Photoshop) after the page is scanned to the computer.
So when using this technique, the original artwork (the actual board that was drawn by the artist), has both light blue and regular gray pencil traces.
But the digitalized version of the page (stored in the computer with a scanner) which is later used in the following stages, has only the gray (and final) pencil traces.
This is a great technique to produce better artwork because the artist has two chances to make the drawing look just right. I suggest you to use it.
Note: Because some collectors don't like artwork that mixes light blue and gray pencils or because some artists prefer to produce very clean pencil pages, there is an alternative to the light blue pencils technique. It requires two boards and a lightbox (a special table that is used to trace drawings.) One board is used to do the sketchy drawing, and the other to do the final, "clean" drawing which is drawn on the lightbox, over and tracing the first and sketchy drawing.)

When the pencils stage is over, a great deal of the final comic book page is done. That's why the penciler (the artist who does the pencils version) is considered by most as important as the writer, and his (or her) name is shown conspicuously in the credits.
But the rest of the stages, inking, coloring and lettering, are also important, even essential to complete a comic book page.
So, we are at what, 2 to 4 hours of work so far?
The name says "comic" but this is serious business. Drawing comics is a lot of work. But it's also very creative, and fun work to do
