Review: Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe - Two Worlds Collide for an Exciting Experience

Written by Podunker:breakingdishesz

We've seen numerous crossover fighting games these past years: X-Men vs Street Fighter, Marvel vs Capcom, Capcom vs SNK, etc... But if there is one we never expected it is Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe. In this new fighter by Midway you can mash-up violent kombatants from Mortal Kombat franchise against DC all time favorite Super Heroes. Raiden vs Superman, Liu Kang vs Captain Marvel, Scorpion vs Flash, Sonya vs Catwoman and many classic characters from both universes are here. Just play with your imagination and you're set.

Platform: Xbox360/PS3
Genre: Fighting
Rating: T for Teen
Release Date: NA: November 16 2008
Developer: Midway Amusement Games
Publisher: Midway Games

Gameplay: 8/10

Finally after some years, the gameplay feels fresh and flows nicely, it can even be compared to the gold days from Mortal Kombat 2. You can quickly move from side to side, do fast combos and jump all around. Air special moves are back, which makes the fight more interesting and competitive. Unfortunately, there is somethng about gameplay that is not as good. It is 2D, but you can still perform 3D movement, which can be a bit confusing at first.

There are 3 interesting modes that complement the gameplay:

Free-fall Kombat- In the middle of a fight you can throw you opponent to lower levels, this allowing players to still fighting while falling by pressing buttons and perform a special move at the end of this "mini-game" and take out opponent's damage when the fall ends.

Klose Kombat- You can get into Klose Kombat by pressing a single button, the camera will do a close-up shot of the characters while they do close-quarter fighting.

Test Your Might- While fighting, the player can smash the opponent through a wall in order to take out damage. The player who throws mashes buttons to increase damage percent, while the other player mashes buttons to decrease damage taken.

Also there is a new mode called "Rage" allowing character's attacks to be unlockable and also increase of damage. All characters from Mortal Kombat have 2 fatalities each, as well as DC villains, while DC heroes have 2 "Heroic Brutalities", similar to fatalities, but in this case, the opponent doesn't actually die.

Story: 7/10

While many people would think the merge of these 2 universes is sort of stupid, the developers actually cared about the story. Story mode allows you to play through the game's story either on the Mortal Kombat or DC Universe side. You play through each chapter as a different character, until you make it to the end where you must defeat Dark Kahn playing as either Raiden or Superman, depending on which story side you have chosen.

It consists on cutscenes and fight one-on-one only. Depending on which side players choose, they will see the characters from the opposite universe as the invaders of their own universe. Every scene from this mode explains elements from story so players can figure out how did the merge happened.

DC Universe consists in 8 Chapters: The Flash, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Captain Marvel, The Joker, Lex Luthor and Superman. Mortal Kombat has 7 Chapters: Liu Kang, Sonya, Jax, Sub Zero, Scorpion, Shang Tsung and Raiden.

When you finish story mode for DC Universe, Darkside will be unlocked, while finishing Mortal Kombat side will end up on unlocking Shao Kahn.

Graphics: 8/10

The graphics are nice, and character models are very detailed, even real looking, during fights, characters show signs of damage, such as bruises, bleeding, and broken cloths and masks, depending on character, some characters like Sonya even get their shirts ripped off. The blood while fighting is a bit disappointing, but nothing too wrong. Stages are also good-looking, textures look detailed, though some parts of the arenas are over-detailed, while others are not, but they are definitely not a let down. The fatality sequences and cutscenes from Story mode show how powerful this console-gen is, the graphics on those videos are indeed good and everyone could figure that out, even playing on a HDTV. MKvsDC runs in full 720p resolution.

View article Images here

Challenge: 8.5/10

There's actually a mode called "Kombo Challenge" which is often considered as the "big thing" from this game, it consists on 10 combos for each character, they are actually very challenging, while you can play this mode for many hours and weeks, some kombos are way too hard that people can feel frustrated, but with practice and luck, anyone will finish this mode. This is definitely a fun mode to play and most likely the reason to keep playing this game. Arcade Mode and Story Mode are not that challenging actually, and can be finished in a couple of days.

Replay Value: 4/10

The replay value for this game is not that great. While there are some modes that can make you enjoy this game, besides Online and Multiplayer, there are no reasons to touch this game after you're done with all achievements/trophies, Because you can unlock all characters and beat arcade mode in a week. At least Online plays good, and if you are one of those who loves playing around online, you can still play this game for a very long time.

Innovation: 7/10

Of course this is not the first crossover to be released, but the fact that they decided to do it with DC Comics was shocking at first, but you can see results now. Gameplay is not like other fighting games either, but is similar to past Mortal Kombat games, even the weapon system, though this time only two characters can play with weapons: Deathstroke and Baraka. So you can either hate it or love it, but you will not find another game that plays like Mortal Kombat vs DC.

Game Modes: 7/10

There are 5 main modes at the main menu: One Player, Two Players, Xbox Live/PSN, Extras And Option.

One Player- One player sub-menu consists in Arcade, Story, Kombo Challenge and Practice. Arcade allows you to choose opponents to fight against, either MK side, DC side or even Mixed. Each character have their own ending and storyline.

Two Player- is for Offline multiplayer only.

Extras- This is where you can see bios for all characters while viewing their models, you can also watch the endings you already unlocked and credits as well.
Options.- Difficulty, Blood Enable, Screen and Sounds. You can edit it all here. If you get blood disabled you won't be able to perform fatalities.

Flaws:

* Not enough gameplay modes.
* While past MK games had lots of extras and unlockable costumes, arenas, characters, art, videos, etc. This game fails at unlockables apartment.
* Only 1 costume per character.
* Some infinities found.

Closing Comment:

If you're a fan of fighting games, or even, a Mortal Kombat or DC fan, this game will most likely be one of your favorites. If you like to play online all day, this is also a good one, though spammers and lag are all over the way, you will still enjoy this game much. But if you're not sure about this game yet, you can always rent, I guarantee that it will not disappoint you.
