Cartoons by definition are drawn out slapstick jokes where animation is just the use of an animated medium to tell a story. So if a show isnt a comedy and has a plot line that carries and progresses then its not a cartoon.

Since the Japanese are very well known for their animation today I would wonder if they would consider older American cartoons like Tom and Jerry trashy because of it's lack of detail compared to their works.
