What is the meaning of life an atheist could find in the rest of his life when he knows his days are numbered?
My father is now hospitalized and the doctor says his days are numbered. He is perfectly conscious with no sign of senility. He just cannot eat because of cancer pain and already became skin and bones.
The doctor told the family that he didn't have much time left.
My father has not been told yet, but he looks vaguely aware of this, as he himself feels his condition is getting worse.
If he were religious, he would now be praying for what he believes in. But my father is an atheist.
How and in what would he be able to find the meaning of life for the rest of his life?
I am asking this question because I believe knowing that would help understand what we can do for him as a family.
Critical opinions about atheism or suggestions for religious conversion are not really asked for in this question.
Please just let me know what the meaning of life would be for a man with a limited life expectancy who does not believe in life after death.
All of our days are numbered. Sometimes you just know the number and sometimes you don't is all. Death is always the inevitable end, though.
So, the atheist that knows the number should not be any different than the one that didn't. They should find the same meaning in life that they had before.
