Do you think Whiplash seem like an unnecessary villain in Ironman 2?
I watched Ironman 2 awhile ago and to me the movie really butchered Whiplash's origin in the Ironman 2 movie. In the comics Whiplash wasn't Russian or a scientist, he was obviously Crimson Dynamo according to the simlar backgrounds of the 2 characters had. I don't why the hell Marvel didn't choose to go with Crimson Dynamo instead of Whiplash as he worn armor at the end of Ironman 2, which his character also didn't do in the comics. It makes no sense, Whiplash is very small henchmen archetype and to me seems like a bad choice for the Villian in Ironman 2.
The movie blown up the Character of Whiplash more then he his character deserved, so why didn't the Director go with Crimson Dynamo but instead Whiplash with Crimson Dynamo's origin.
OK, I know that Crimson Dynamo was Russian, so what you say is a little confusing, but mainly because IM2 makes it so. My first thought before the film came out was "Why Whiplash?". A terrible character to begin with, I can think of much better candidates for cinematic focus. A little research brings some things to light.
First, this Whiplash's father has the same name as the original Crimson Dynamo and worked with Howard Stark, Tony's father, on the original arc reactor in this film.
Second, the Cold War is over, so there is no longer a valid reason for IM to run afoul of communists from Russia. I don't know if Rourke had this in mind all along, all I know is that he was the one who insisted that Whiplash be Russian because he simply wanted to do the accent. The man looks like a bear but wants to be taken seriously as an actor. Go figure.
It looks to me like they are setting up a new origin for Crimson Dynamo, one that gives the armored communist a personal reason for crossing the armored Avenger. If that's the case, I don't see why they couldn't have just done it all in one film. I liked IM2, but think both Whiplash and Crimson Dynamo are poor choices. Iron Man is not a super patriot. There's really no reason for him to cross paths with Russian villains this time. I find them colorless and boring, so I hope I'm wrong and it's just me thinking too much.
I don't really mind that they 'butchered' Whiplash's origin. He never had much of an origin to begin with, and is such a minor character that I wonder why they should bother with him at all. I really hope they save CD until at least the fourth film, and that he's not the main villain if and when they do. We'll just have to wait and see.
