Is the final fantasy series a continous sequil or is each game diffrent?

I'm starring to get into final fantasy and want to know more before I purchase a game.

    Each game is different, with a few exceptions:

    Final Fantasy IV: The After Years (The sequel to FF4)
    Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core (Prequel to FF7)
    Final Fantasy VII: Dirge of Cerberus (Sequel to FF7)
    Final Fantasy X-2 (Sequel to FF10)

    Haha, I’m playing 8 at the moment.
    Each final fantasy game is stand-alone, except for games like

    FFX-2 – a sequel to FFX
    FF7: Crisis Core – a prequel to FF7

    There are plenty more, but I wont go into them.

    Each game is different, but the series has some games which have others that continue it.

    For example, Final Fantasy VII had Crisis Core, Dirge of Cereberus, and even the movie, Advent Children. Final Fantasy X had X-2. Some of the other games take place in the same world, but not the same characters.

    Ach game is different there has only ever been one true sequel and that was final fantasy x and x-2 (not xii but actually x-2) all though some would count final fantasy vii to having sequels I personally believe they are spin-offs.

    If you are wondering wether you have to start at the begginging heck no! I started with final fantasy x went to ix then to vii and it’s many spin offs to viii and then x-2. Currently in the middle of xiii
