How did the stereotype that cartoons are for kids originate?

In my opinion an episode of Animaniacs was usually wittier than an episode of Seinfeld. Plus many other animated shows are full of adult jokes that would go over most kids heads. The classic Looney Tunes cartoons were pretty violent even if it was only animated violence, they were pretty radical for the day and age they were made in. So can anyone answer my question?

A lot of people are under the impression that if kids can enjoy something, it’s meant for kids and adults shouldn’t enjoy it. People often ignore that 1 show can entertain an entire family. Others also think that if it doesn’t have adult themes in it like sex, violence, more complicated adult emotional issues, cussing, etc. that it isn’t for them.

On the Animaniacs example you gave; with you 100%. When I went back and watched the dvds I was amazed at some of the humor that I know I didn’t get the first time when I watched the show when I was younger.
